Loudoun County, part of Northern Virginia, is often considered the best wine region in Virginia for the quality of its wineries. The region boasts numerous award-winning wineries known for their exceptional wines, particularly Viognier, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot and Norton. In addition to wine tasting, Loudoun County offers a wide range of activities. You can explore historic towns like Middleburg and Leesburg, go horseback riding, visit breweries, dine at fine restaurants, and enjoy scenic drives along the picturesque countryside.
If you're coming from a distant location, you can book a flight to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). It's the closest major airport to Loudoun County and the Northern Virginia wine region.
After arriving at Dulles International Airport, rent a car from one of the airport's rental agencies. Having a car is the most convenient way to explore the Northern Virginia wine region, as it allows you to visit multiple wineries and navigate the area at your own pace.
Loudoun County is approximately a 30 to 45-minute drive from Dulles International Airport. You can take the Dulles Toll Road (Route 267) and then connect to Route 7 or other local roads that lead to various wineries in the county.
If you'd rather not drive, consider booking a guided wine tour or shuttle service that operates in Loudoun County. These services often pick up visitors from nearby areas, including Washington, D.C., and offer transportation to multiple wineries, providing a convenient and safe way to explore the region without driving.

Did you know that 59% of US wine consumers are female but only 18% of US winemakers are women? Here at Girlfriend Weekend, we want to support the women breaking down barriers in this industry. When planning your wine country weekend, we suggest a visit to any of the wineries on our list. At the time of publication, all of these producers have a female winemaker at the helm!
Be sure to visit the winery website to check on tasting room hours and if reservations are needed. Some tasting rooms welcome walk-ins, but others require you to call ahead or reserve online. Tasting room experiences can range from a simple tasting to full wine and food pairings and tours of the winery. Check out all the options and plan your visit according to your budget and schedule.
Our last tip is an important one. It’s easy to get swept away by the excitement of it all, but carefully consider how many wineries to visit each day. We recommend 2-3 with a stop for a hearty lunch along the way. Consider hiring a driver for the day, or if you are on a budget, limit the number of places you visit or pick someone as the designated driver!

For a relaxing, picturesque, and meaningful stop on your girls’ getaway, Morven Park is a gorgeous place to explore. This 1,000‑acre estate is home to the world‑famous Morven Park International Equestrian Center, the historic Davis Mansion, and the Center for Civic Impact — all set among rolling lawns, towering oak trees, and charming garden paths.
You can wander the formal gardens, enjoy a picnic under century‑old branches, or hike miles of peaceful nature trails. The gardens and grounds are free to visit and open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., making it an easy and beautiful way to spend a morning or afternoon.
Inside the Davis Mansion, you’ll hear stories about former Virginia Governor Westmoreland Davis and his wife Marguerite, along with a glimpse into social and civic life in the early 20th century. But Morven Park’s history stretches much further back, and it’s more complex. From around 1800 to 1864, approximately 80 men, women, and children were enslaved on the property. Today, ongoing research seeks to honor their experiences and contributions by recovering and sharing their stories.

If your girls’ trip could use a peaceful nature walk with a side of rich history, Oatlands is a beautiful and meaningful place to explore. Set on historic grounds, this estate offers 8 miles of hiking trails, 4 acres of gardens, picnic areas, and a collection of historic structures (including a mansion, barns, and an 1805 greenhouse) all tucked into gorgeous countryside.
You can wander the trails for free during business hours, grab a garden pass to enjoy the beautifully maintained grounds, or take a guided mansion visit to learn more about the full history of the site. The tours don’t shy away from the truth. They share Oatlands’ story as a slave plantation and the lives of the people who lived and labored here from the late 1700s through the 20th century. Through initiatives like “Reclaim Your Story,” Oatlands is working to honor the lives of the enslaved people by researching descendants and sharing a more complete, inclusive history.
