How to Plan the Perfect Girls' Weekend

The hustle and bustle of daily life often leaves little room for quality time with your best girlfriends. That’s why planning a girl’s weekend is the perfect remedy to unwind, relax, and create lasting memories together. From picking the ideal date to packing your bags with essentials, this guide will help you organize the ultimate girls’ weekend. Let the countdown to laughter, bonding, and fun begin!

Pick A Date, Lock It In

Choosing the right date is the first step in making your girls’ weekend a reality. Consider everyone’s schedules, commitments, and any special occasions that might be coming up. Aim for a weekend that allows everyone to unwind without the stress of looming deadlines or responsibilities. Communication is key here – organize a wine night, group chat or virtual meeting to coordinate availability and preferences.

If you can’t find a date, take a vote. Choose a date that works for most. Plan far enough ahead that you can all commit but not so far that things might pop up and derail the trip. And remember, it is better to work around a date than to try to work around schedules. If you lock in a date for an annual getaway (say third weekend in February) and stick to it for the long haul, friends can plan to keep that date open in subsequent years. If everyone can’t make it this year, there is a better chance they can come next year.

Agree on a Budget

Money matters and being transparent about budget expectations is crucial to avoid any financial discomfort. Discuss your budget constraints openly and agree on a spending range that works for everyone. This may include accommodation, transportation, activities, and meals. Don’t forget to factor in a little extra for unexpected expenses or spontaneous treats.

Discuss how you will handle splitting costs for the trip. Make sure that anyone who pays for something before the trip gets reimbursed before the trip. For example, if one person books and pays for the accommodation, make sure everyone pays her back their share before you depart. This will help to avoid hard feelings and mix-ups down the road.

During the trip, consider using a shared spreadsheet or a cost-splitting app like Splitwise for record keeping. It is easy for one person to cover the bill at a bar or buy a bottle of wine for the group to share, but some people might get a little miffed if they feel they got stuck with the cost. By using an app (recommended) or a spreadsheet, you can make sure everyone keeps track of and pays what they owe.

Set an Intention

Girls’ weekends come in all shapes and sizes, so decide on the type of experience you’re craving. Whether it’s a relaxing spa retreat, an adventurous outdoor excursion, or a bustling city getaway, make sure everyone is on the same page. Take a vote or gather suggestions to ensure the chosen destination and activities cater to everyone’s interests.

Do your best and try not to overschedule the weekend. Two or three days is not a lot of time, and you want to maximize the opportunities you have for focusing on each other and catching up. Plan one or two activities per day but make sure to allow for ample lounge time to just be together.

Collaborate and Communicate

This one depends on the personality of your group. Is one of your friends a natural planner? If everyone agrees, assign her the task of planning. Make sure she is open to suggestions and can honor everyone’s budget requirements and then let her do her thing. This can be a lifesaver for groups who don’t like to plan or just don’t have the time. Be sure to give her grace if any snafus arise during the trip. Remember she did you all a favor by taking on this task.

No natural planner in your group? Divide and conquer! Assign specific planning tasks to each member of the group to share the workload and ensure everyone has a say in the itinerary. One person can handle accommodation, another transportation, and someone else can focus on activities and reservations. Regular check-ins will help keep everyone in the loop and avoid any last-minute hiccups. (See the note about splitting expenses in the budget section to make sure that everyone pays their fair share.)

Packing List

Create a shared packing list to ensure everyone brings the essentials without overloading their suitcase. Consider the destination, preferred dress code, and planned activities when packing – whether it’s beachwear, hiking gear, or fancy dinner attire.

Make sure no one feels like they ‘Didn’t get the memo’. If you are planning a night out, will you all get dressed up or keep it casual? Talk about it so that everyone is on the same page, and nobody feels left out.

Encourage open communication about any special needs or preferences to make the weekend as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

Let's Be Fair

Fairness is the cornerstone of a successful girls’ weekend. Be mindful of everyone’s preferences and prioritize activities that cater to the group’s collective interests. Rotate responsibilities to ensure everyone gets a chance to contribute. If conflicts arise, address them openly and find compromises that satisfy everyone involved. The goal is to create an atmosphere of equality and shared enjoyment. Here are some examples of situations that could arise:

  • Someone gets stuck on the pull-out couch or some other suboptimal accommodation. Some friend groups really won’t care, but for others, this can be a sticky situation. Discuss it openly and decide if the affected person should get a break on their share of the cost. If you are using a cost-sharing app, this is relatively easy to do. If not, why not have everyone treat her to dinner for her sacrifice? A little kindness goes a long way.

  • Someone has a dietary restriction. Vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free? There are so many restrictions that come into play when it comes to diet. Be sensitive to the restrictions when planning your meals and make sure there are options for everyone. However, if the only vegan-friendly restaurant is 30 miles from your location, you may have to comprise. In this case, offer to all go in on some hearty vegan snacks for the hotel room so your veggie friend won’t be starving all night. That way she can order a salad and enjoy dinner out but have something more filling later knowing her friends have her back. Empathy and creative problem-solving are hallmarks of good friendships.

Relax and Enjoy

With the planning complete, it is time to let yourself simply relax and enjoy the ride. Know this: not everything will go as planned. Allow for flexibility and spontaneity. Don’t be bothered if a big group chooses to split during downtime to do activities everyone enjoys. Don’t lament not eating at every restaurant you had on your list. Take a deep breath when the group decides they are too hungover to take in that museum.

This is your opportunity to strengthen bonds, create unforgettable memories, and take a break from the routine of daily life. Remember to simply enjoy each other’s company without unrealistic or rigid expectations. Your trip will be a joy! Here’s to laughter, adventure, and the power of female friendships!
